What to Bring and Where to Meet

Details for Hiking and Biking Adventures
Below are the details for the Fresco Hiking and Biking Adventures. Please review the information and call if you have any additional questions at (301) 352-5272. Once you have registered and need to make changes in your attendance, please call before 6AM by the morning of the trip.

WHAT TO WEAR:

* Comfortable, well-broken-in, sturdy walking shoes or ankle-high boots.
* Wear two pairs of socks; first layer is a thin pair that will absorb moisture (liner sock), and the second layer that will add for comfort and keep your foot dry (wool or thicker sock). Bring an extra pair in case you need to refresh
* Protective clothing should include:
   - A hat or scarf for sun and bug protection/bike helmets for protection on bike-rides
   - Long comfortable loose fitting pants or shorts with knee socks (for warm weather)
   - A cotton blend shirt provides for better perspiration and comfort

WHAT TO BRING:
* Water canteen or bottle filled with water (at least 1 quart, bring what you feel you can carry or need to drink)
* Light snacks such as nuts and fruit are good for energy
* You may want to change up into dryer clothes at the end, so bring an extra T-shirt and pair of socks
* For bike-rides, a hybrid or road bike is needed

WHERE TO MEET

Please arrive to all designated areas by 8:45AM  or 12:45PM (unless otherwise specified in the directions). Most morning programs will begin at 9:00AM and complete by 2PM and afternoon programs will begin at 1:00PM and complete by 4:00PM. We will leave promptly. If you are coming from a location that may require different directions, call so that your travel route can be coordinated.

January Hike Location - Turkey Run/Potomac Heritage Trail in Virginia
Meet in the parking area of the Turkey Run Park
DirectionsTurkey Run Park is located in McLean, Virginia, two miles off the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495) on the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP).
  • From I-495 (The Beltway) - Take exit 43. Follow GWMP for 2 miles to the Turkey Run Park exit on the right. Follow signs into the park.
  • From Washington, D.C. and Old Town Alexandria: Take the GWMP northbound. Take a right-hand exit at the Turkey Run Park sign just after the Parkway Headquarters/U.S. Park Police Substation. Make first right turn into the park.
February Hike Location - Downtown DC Urban Walk in Washington, DC

Meet in front of the Smithsonian Metro Stop in Washington, DC

(we will be near the grassy area on the mall once you come out of the metro)

Directions:

Metro Riders –Take the blue or orange line to the Smithsonian Metro Stop and take the Smithsonian exit (NOT the Independence Ave exit).  We'll meet just outside of the station on the Mall. 

 

Drivers – Plan to meet the group at the Smithsonian Metro entrance).  The street address of the Smithsonian Castle is 1000 Jefferson Drive, S.W., Washington D.C.  For most drivers it can be accessed most easily from 14th Street, turning onto Independence Avenue or Jefferson Drive.  Heading NORTH on 14th Street (from Virginia), this will be a RIGHT turn onto Independence Avenue.  Heading SOUTH on 14th Street (from Maryland) this will be a LEFT turn to the Smithsonian Castle.  There is a better chance of finding parking available on Independence Avenue behind the Smithsonian Museum than directly on the Mall.

 


March Hike Location - Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC

Valley Trail in Rock Creek Park 

 

Directions: 
The parking area is near Military Road in Washington, DC.
From Washington, DC, take 16th Street to Military Road (16th St. may also be reached from the Silver Spring Georgia Ave. exit from the 495 Beltway).
Take the first exit off Military Road to Beach/Ross Drive.
After turning into the park, make a left turn at the stop sign and continue to the next corner near the Park Police Station.  Turn left and park in lot 6.


 
March Hike Location - Sugarloaf Mountain in Maryland
Sugarloaf Mountain: Location: Sugarloaf Mountain in Comus, Maryland south of Frederick
Directions:
From the Washington Beltway 495, Follow RT 270 NORTH to exit 22 for Hyattstown, circle under I-270 and continue on RT 109 to Comus.
From Baltimore, take 695 to 70 west to Rte 270 south to exit 22 for Hyattstown and continue onto rte 109 to Comus.
Make a RIGHT on Comus Road to the Stronghold entrance (go through the first parking area) and turn right to follow the road up the hill to the East View parking area 
Expected driving time is 30 minutes from rte 270.

April Hike Location
 - Green Ridge State Park in Maryland
Directions to Trail Head: 
Rte 270 north to rte 70 West towards Hagerstown, MD
Exit west towards Cumberland to I-68 at the 70 split
Take exist 64 to Green Ridge State Park
Meet in parking area


May Hike Location
 - Mannasas Battlefield in Virginia
Manassas Battlefield Visitor Center
Address is 6511 Sudley RdManassas, VA  20109
From Interstate 66 take exit 47B – Sudley Rd.
Make a right on rte 234N and proceed through the light.
The Visitor center is on the right just pass the Northern Virginia Community Center

May 5 Hike Location - Appalachian Trail in Maryland
Meet in the parking area of Gathland State Park.
Directions:
Take the Washington Beltway to Rte 270 or if coming from Baltimore take rte 70 west towards Frederick  From Maryland Route 270, go north to Route 70 past Frederick, MD.  
Take 70 West to US 340 (make sure you are in the right lane to get to rte 340 from rte 70)
Take exit for MD 17 north.Turn left on Gapland Rd (MD 572)Park in parking area of Gathland State ParkExpected driving time is 45 minutes from rte 270.Address: Gathland State Park

June 25 Bike Ride Along the W&OD Trail
We will meet at the Barcroft Sports and Fitness Center Parking Lot located at:

Here's the directions from DC:
395 south, take exit 8 A, merge on to Washing Blvd towards S Arington Ridge Rd.,
Merge onto VA 244 W/Columbia Pike via ramp to Baileys Crossroads,
Make a left on South George Mason Dr.
make a left on South Four Mile Run Dr. 
Barcroft Sports and Fitness Center is on the right, (its the new looking building). 

September Hike Location
 - Gwynn Falls Trail in Maryland
From I-695 (Baltimore Beltway):
Take Exit #16 (Route 70 East, Park & Ride). Proceed to Exit 94 (Security Boulevard) and exit on to Security Boulevard north. Remain in the right lane and turn right at the first street - Old Ingleside Avenue. Cross the bridge, proceed to the stop sign, and turn right on Franklintown Road. Continue on Franklintown Road past the next three stop signs for approximately 1.5 miles to the Trailhead at Winans Meadow on the left.


From I-83 (Jones Falls Expressway) and North Central Baltimore:
If approaching from the south, take 28th Street westbound to Druid Park Lake Drive. If approaching from the north, go west on 29th Street to Druid Park Lake Drive. Once on Druid Park Lake Drive, go to McCullough Street (Druid Hill Park will be on your right). Move into one of the two left lanes and turn left at Gwynns Falls Parkway (just past the Conservatory). Continue on Gwynns Falls Parkway to Hilton Street and turn left. Continue on Hilton Street to North Avenue and turn right. Go one block and turn left onto Morris Road. Turn right onto Franklintown Road. Continue on Franklintown Road approximately 1.1 miles to The Trailhead at Winans Meadow on the right.


From Downtown Baltimore:
Take Franklin Street (US Route 40 West). Remain on US Route 40 West to Winans Way. Turn right/north on Winans Way. Proceed to the third stop sign (Franklintown Road) and turn right. Continue on Franklintown Road to the Trailhead at Winans Meadow on the left.

October Hike Location - Appalachian Trail in Maryland

November Hike Location - November 3- Mannasas Battlefield in Virginia

The Visitor center is on the right just pass the Northern Virginia Community Center


December Hike at Harpers Ferry in West Virginia
meet at the Harpers Ferry Visitor Center
Meet on location at 8:45AM  
 

Directions:Take the Washington Beltway to Rte 270 or if coming from Baltimore take rte 70 west towards Frederick 
From Maryland Route 270, go north to Route 70 past Frederick, MD.
Take 70 West to US 340 (make sure you are in the right lane to get to rte 340 from rte 70)
Follow signs from 340 to the Harpers Ferry Visitor Center
We will meet in the open area outside of the Visitor Center
Expected driving time is 45 minutes from rte 270.


December Hike Location

Holiday Walk In Harpers Ferry

Location: Harper's Ferry, West Virginia 

Directions:

Take the Washington Beltway to Rte 270 or if coming from Baltimore take rte 70 west towards Frederick 
From Maryland Route 270, go north to Route 70 past Frederick, MD.
Take 70 West to US 340 
After the flashing light at Valley road continue on rte 340 and go over the Potomac River
Continue to the Harpers Ferry Park Entrance.
We will meet at the Visitor's Center

Lake Artemesia in Greenbelt, Maryland

From the Capital Beltway (I-95), take Kenilworth Avenue (Rt. 201) south for 0.5 mile. Turn right on Greenbelt Road (Rt. 193) following it 0.75 miles. Turn right onto Branchville Rd. after Beltway Plaza (see sign for Lake Artemesia), following it for 0.7 miles. The road will bear left and left again crossing under Greenbelt Rd. where it changes into Ballew Ave. Just after the stop sign at Berwyn Rd., turn left into the parking lot for Lake Artemesia.

Patuxent River Park in Upper Marlboro, Maryland

From the Washington Beltway, take exit 11A, Pennsylvania Ave (rte 4)

Go 8 miles and take rte 301 South

Go 3.6 miles and turn le 947 ft on Croom Rd (rte 382, DO NOT take the first Croom Station road!!)

Go 2 miles and turn left into the Park Entrance.   

Follow signs to the Visitor Parking area.

Cunningham Falls State Park in Thurmont Maryland - 8 miles

From the Washington area: Take the Beltway 495 to rte 270. 
From Maryland Route 270, go north into Frederick and continue on Rte 15 North for 18 miles.  Take the exit for Rte 77, which has signs for the Catoctin Mountain National Park. 
Follow signs to the Visitors Center. 
Park in the gravel lot to the left of the building.
Expect to drive at least one hour from rte 270 and the beltway
From the Baltimore area: Take the Beltway 695 to rte70 west towards Frederick
In Frederick take rte 15 north for 18 miles to rte 77 and follow directions above.
Expect to drive at least one hour from rte 70 and the beltway

 

 


Clearwater Nature Center

Many  trails in the Cosca Regional Park through the woods and around the lake.   Easy to moderate level hiking.

Location: Cosca Regional Park in Clinton, Maryland.

Directions:

From the Washington Beltway, 495, take exit 8 for Route 5 going south towards Waldorf. 

Travel for about 3 miles and make a right turn at the light on Suratts Road (there is a hotel on the hill on the left side of the road)

Follow the road to the end and make a left onto  Brandywine Road. 

Turn right onto Thrift Road 

Follow Thrift Road to the entrance of the Clearwater Nature Center (continue at least 1/2 mile pass the main entrance into the park)

Goldmine Trail 
Easy to moderate hike to great falls on the Maryland side of the Potomac River.

Location:  Near the Carderock area of the C&O Canal Trail within 1 mile from the northern part of the 495 Beltway in Potomac Maryland (near the American Legion Bridge at the MD/VA line).    

 Directions to Trail Head:

From the DC beltway (495), take exit 41 for Carderock /Great Falls.    

Take the first exit and follow the signs  to the left to the Carderock parking area.   

Go under a short tunnel then turn right into the Parking lot.

Sugarloaf Mountain.

Travel along  the Mountain Peaks Trail, and for those that like to climb, an optional climb onto the highest lookout point at the end.  This scenic trail traverses through the Monocacy National Resource Management Area in Maryland with great valley and vista views. The terrain is moderate with some inclines.

Location: Comus, Maryland south of Frederick

Directions:
From the Washington Beltway 495, Follow RT 270 NORTH to exit 22 for Hyattstown, circle under I-270 and continue on RT 109 to Comus.
From Baltimore, take 695 to 70 west to Rte 270 south to exit 22 for Hyattstown and continue onto rte 109 to Comus.
Make a RIGHT on Comus Road to the Stronghold entrance and follow the road up the hill to the East View parking area

Gunpowder Falls State Park

Location: Hereford, Maryland 

Directions:

I-95 to I-695(towards Towson) to I-83 NORTH.  

From I-83, take Exit 27 and drive EAST(right turn) on MD 137 (Mt. Carmel Rd.)  

In 1½ mile, turn LEFT onto MD 45 (York Road).  

Travel NORTH 0.8 mile. Then make a LEFT onto Bunker Hill Road. You will come to the parking area in about 1.1 miles.

Little Bennett Regional Park Hike Location: Clarksburg, Maryland  Directions:

From the Washinton Beltway I-495, go north on rte 270 toward Frederick, MD

From the Baltimore Beltway, I-695, take 70 west toward Frederick to 270 south toward Washington

From rte 270, take exit 18 for rte 121 (Clarksburg, RD), go east (right turn)

Continue down the Rd for about 1 mile and after crossing Rte 355, go an addtional  mile.

After crossing the bridge, the parking area will be on the right side of the road (parking spaces are limited, so try to travel with others where possible)

Patuxent River Park  in Queene Anne Maryland 
From DC or Virginia:
Take the 495 Beltway to Pennsylvanie Avenue (Rte 4) into Maryland towards Upper Marlboro
After the Upper Marlboro exit, take Rte 301 north Towards Baltimore
Go about 8 miles and ewatch for signs to Queen Anne Rd
Make a right turn onto Queen Anne Rd.
You will see a brown sign titled "Town of Queen Anne"
See Instructions below from Queen Anne RD.
    
From Rte 50/New York Avenue:
Follow Rte 50 East towards Annapolis 
Take the exit for rte 197 in Bowie (Collington Rd)
Bear right from the ramp to rte 301 and follow for 3 miles to Queen Anne Rd
See Directions below fom Queen Anne Rd.
    
From Baltimore:
Take Beltway 695 to rte 97 south towards Annapolis
Take exit for rte 3 - Bowie/Crofton
Follow rte 3 for about 5 miles and it turns into rte 301
After the Rte 214 overpass, make a left onto Queen Anne Rd.
You will see a brown sign for "Town of Queen Anne"
  
From Queen Anne Rd.
Go for about 3 miles and look for the sign for the 4-H Club
Turn right and prior to the 4H Club, there will be a road to the left. 
Turn left and then turn right into the parking area for the Patuxent River Trail.

Anne Arundel County Bike Ride 

Directions:

From the Washington Beltway 495, take the exit for Central Ave Rte 214 going east. 

Continue on rte 214 for about 10 miles.  After passing rte 424, continue for 3 more miles. 

The Park and Ride lot is located on the left side of the road just before the light at rte 2.  Once you see the BBT bank, turn left into the parking area next to the church.

Potomac Heritage Trail 

This picturesque hike  begins at the Theodore Roosevelt Island parking area into a hidden wonderland of streams, rocks, waterfalls and great views.

Location: Off the George Washington Parkway near Rosalyn, VA.

 

Directions: 

To get to the GWMP:

From the Washington Beltway at the MD/VA Line near the American Legion Bridge, take the exit for the George Washington Memorial Parkway going south (the last exit on the MD side and the first exit on the VA side)

Or

From rte 295, take 395 to the GWMP going north

Exit at the Theodore Roosevelt Island and park in the parking area on the right

Valley Trail in Rock Creek Park 

 

Directions: 
The parking area is near Military Road in Washington, DC.
From Washington, DC, take 16th Street to Military Road (16th St. may also be reached from the Silver Spring Georgia Ave. exit from the 495 Beltway).
Take the first exit off Military Road to Beach/Ross Drive.
After truning into the park, make a left turn at the stop sign and continue to the next corner near the Park Police Station.  Turn left and park in lot 6.


Glover Archbold Trail in Washington DC

The meeting Point is at the McDonalds on Van Ness and Wisconsin Ave. NW located in the 4200 block. 

You may want to consider taking the METRO, since city parking is not very convenient in the area near the trailhead. 

From the metro, take the red-line to the Tenley Circle stop.  After coming out of the metro, walk 4 blocks south on Wisconsin Ave. to the McDonalds on the corner. 

Make sure you bring money for the METRO as we will take it back to the starting point once we complete the hike in Georgetown. If you plan to drive into town, mapquest to the address of  4200 Wisconsin Ave, Washington, DC 20016 If you arrive late and we have left, the trailhead is on Vann Ness St, just across from the Johnson florist and garden center.  Follow the path into the Glover Archbold Park.

Appalachian Trail Near Front Royal
Meet at the off road parking area along rte 522 in Front Royal, VA
Take the Washington Beltway 495 to Virginia and go to rte 66 West towards Front Royal

From Route 66  take exit 13 for Route 55 (Linden).  

Turn left from the exit to go to rte 55.
Turn right on rte 55 and go for about 5 miles
Turn left on rte 522
Travel for approximately 4 miles and after passign the sign for gate 6 (on the left), look for the open area on the right. There is a trail marker for the Appalachian Trail.  Park along the raodside on the right near the trail entrance.



Huntley Meadows Park

This is an easy hike along a paved sidewalk and boardwalk.

Location: Alexandria, Virginia

Directions:  From the Capital Beltway (495) take Exit 1 in Virginia, which is Route 1 SOUTH.
Travel approximately 3.5 miles to Lockheed Blvd, and turn RIGHT.
Proceed about 1/2 mile to the entrance to Huntley Meadows, which will be on your LEFT.
We will meet in the parking lot.

Washington & Old Dominion Bike Ride

Location: Herndon, Virginia

Directions:
Take the Washington beltway 495 to the Tyson's Corner Exit - Route 7 West towards Reston and Leesburg
Pass Reston and continue to Herndon.
Make a left at the light on Dranesville Rd (Sterling Town Center is on the left).  Road name will change to Park Rd, then to Monroe St and eventually intersect with Elden Street
Make a right on Elden St. and next right to Station Street.  Park in the parking area.

Old Rag Mountain 

Location: Sperryville,  Virginia

Directions:

Take the beltway 495 to Rt. 66 west in Virginia toward Front Royal. 

Take exit 43A to rte 29 south (Gainesville).

Travel for about 10 minutes and take 29 business route and 211West (right lane exit).

Make at right at the Howard Johnson to continue on rte 211 toward Sperryville.

Once in Sperryvill, turn left at the light to rte 231 where there is an antique store on the corner

Within a mile, make a right on Ft. Valley Road

Make a right on Sharp Rock Rd

Make a right on rte 707.

Make a right on Nether Rd at the stop sign and enter into the town of Nethers.

There are 2 parking areas.  If you arrive early enough you may be able to park in the top lot, continue past the first lot and go up the hill to the second lot.  If the second lot is full, turn around and go back to the first lot and park. Pay your park entrance fee and walk up the hill to the trail head.

Appalachian Trail In Harpers Ferry

Location: Harper's Ferry, West Virginia 

Directions:

Take the Washington Beltway to Rte 270 or if coming from Baltimore take rte 70 west towards Frederick 
From Maryland Route 270, go north to Route 70 past Frederick, MD.
Take 70 West to US 340 
After the flashing light at Valley road continue on rte 340 and go over the Potomac River
At the end of the second bridge which is over the Shenandoah River, make an immediate right turn onto Shenandoah St.  Turn right into the parking area. 
If you see the Comfort Inn on the right side of the road, then you just missed the turn (so turn around and then make the left onto the street)

Bull Run Occoquan Trail Hike in Virginia
We will meet in the parking area of the Fountainhead Regional Park in Fairfax Station, Virginia at 8:45AM

Fairfax Station, Virginia

Take Interstate 95 south towards Occoquan, Virginia

Take exit 160 for rte 123 (Ox Road) going north

 

Travel about 4 miles on Rte 123 and make a left turn at the light for Hampton Rd(rte 647) Go right with Hampton Road at the intersection of rte 5500

Turn left into the park after travel for 5 minutes (rte 727)

After passing the maintenance building, the parking area will be on the right

Expected driving time is one hour 15 minutes from most areas in the Washington metro area.  The drive is approximately 35 minutes from the Wilson Bridge.

Oak Canyon Trail in Virginia Location: Sperryville,  Virginia

Directions:

Take the beltway 495 to Rt. 66 west in Virginia toward Front Royal. 

Take exit 43A to rte 29 south (Gainesville).

Travel for about 10 minutes and take 29 business route and 211West (right lane exit).

Make at right at the Howard Johnson to continue on rte 211 toward Sperryville.

Once in Sperryvill, turn left at the light to rte 231 where there is an antique store on the corner

Turn left at the 'T' intersection

Within a mile, make a right on Ft. Valley Road

Make a right on Sharp Rock Rd

Make a right on rte 707.

Make a right on Nether Rd at the stop sign and enter into the town of Nethers.

There are 2 parking areas.  If you arrive early enough you may be able to park in the top lot, continue past the first lot and go up the hill to the second lot.  If the second lot is full, turn around and go back to the first lot and park. Pay your park entrance fee and walk up the hill to the trail head.

Bull Run Occoquan Trail Hike in Virginia (at Bull Run Marina) 
Parking area is near the Bull Run Marina  Old Yates Ford Rd 703-631-0549 
Take Interstate 95 south towards Occoquan, Virginia
Take exit 160 for rte 123 ( Ox Road) going north

Travel about 7 miles north on Rte 123 and make a left turn at the light for Henderson Rd. 

Travel on Henderson Rdfor about 5 miles
At the Stop Sign Make a left onto Old Yates Ford Rd

Travel about 1 miles to the parking area on the left (across from street named Kincheloe)

If you cross a bridge then you have just missed the parking area, so turn around and come back

Expected driving time is one hour 15 minutes from most areas in the Washington metro area.  The drive is approximately  40 minutes from the Wilson Bridge.
